South Africa v France Tasting
Thursday 25 September
6.00 – 8.00pm
To celebrate 40 years of trading we thought it would be really fun to set up our own Blind Tasting as a nod to the renown “Judgement of Paris” held nearly 50 years ago in Paris. Ian Haggie will be responsible for selecting his best South African wines and we will choose our best French contenders! Anthony Barne MW will be supporting the French. You will score each wine and it will be you who’ll decide the winning country. Lots of fun and gasps are to be expected.
The background to the evening is that in the early seventies an English Wine Merchant, Steven Spurrier, set up a Wine School, ‘L’Académie du Vin” in Paris and shortly afterwards started a wine shop. In May ’76 he wanted to expand his wine offering to include Californian wines which he loved. So he set-up a blind tasting and invited 9 “of the best and most influential wine authorities from across France” to taste a selection American wines against French wines. The historic result, won by the California winemakers is known as “The Judgement of Paris”. It revolutionised the California wine industry as it took on the French wine market.
So if you fancy a fun night out tasting some delicious wines please do join us!
